Faculty Funding

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies has been funded by the U.S. Department of Education both to be a designated Title VI National Resource Center (NRC) in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and to provide Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships for our students over the next four years. The funding amounts to approximately 1.7 million in the four-year cycle. Our proposed initiatives for 2018-2022 focus on the theme of Connecting Communities in KU and the heartland to Latin American and Caribbean communities and institutions, in part by leveraging our existing partnerships locally and abroad.

This funding creates some amazing opportunities for curriculum development, programming, community outreach, and language learning in the region. In particular, there are funds available for KU faculty and non-KU educators to travel abroad and/or to conduct individual or collaborative research (not conference presentation). Below are several opportunities (click on the links to access the online request forms):

  • Faculty Research International Travel Awards: To conduct research (up to $1,000). Competitive preference will be given to projects that address pressing global questions. Application: CV, 300-word narrative about research project, other funding sources for travel, and detailed budget. Revolving deadline but no later than 45 days before travel.
  • Partner Projects Faculty Travel Awards: To conduct collaborative research, exchanges, or to build new initiatives with Latin American / Caribbean partners (e.g. University of Costa Rica, Paraguay, University of Sonora) (up to $2,000). Please explain the collaborative nature of your project and submit a detailed budget. Application: CV, 300-word narrative about collaborative project, and detailed budget. Revolving deadline but no later than 45 days before travel.
  • Regional Institutions Collaboration Cluster Awards: For projects with faculty from other regional institutions including area Community Colleges or Minority Serving Institutions ($5,000 per project). Application: CV, 300-word narrative about project, and detailed budget. Deadline: Feb 15, 2019.
  • Study Abroad Partner Facilitators: If you are leading a field school or study abroad program to Latin America, there are funds to pay a “partner” co-leader who is a faculty member from an area Community College or Minority Serving Institution. We can also use funds towards your own travel expenses in order to bring down the costs for students. We can also help to “match” the KU faculty member to a faculty member from a CC / MSI. Application: Expression of Interest, CVs of involved faculty, description of Study Abroad / Field School Program, travel budget for faculty member. Revolving deadline but no later than 60 days before travel.
