Welcome
Welcome to the Center of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS). We’ve recently changed our name to make our connection to the Caribbean more visible. We’ll be involved in a few events this Spring that highlight our connection to the region: a teacher’s reach-out workshops on January 26th and a reading group at several local libraries that will focus on the March visit of Haitian-American author Edwidge Danticat to the Hall Center. This semester will also feature a Central American film festival, where we are lucky to be able to present several films that have seldom been screened in the U.S. Look for filmmaker Hispano Durón’s merienda which will help to introduce the series and the film schedule under the events section of this website.
We continue to offer Kaqchikel Maya and Quechua, and a summer study abroad in Nicaragua that focuses on Miskitu people and language. Now is the season for students to apply for Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships to study these languages as well as Portuguese for both the academic year and summer! These are a great opportunity to broaden your horizons!
KU students continue to participate in the Model Organization of the American States (MOAS), a course that culminates in students’ participation in the Washington MOAS, a simulation of the proceedings of the actual Organization in which each attending university represents a country. Check out the video to see MOAS in action. This year we are working to extend this course beyond KU by facilitating the development of Pan American Clubs in high school and community colleges in the region; this will allow us to get students excited about learning a foreign language early and to see the usefulness of learning about other cultures. We hope to host a series of events one day during Pan Am week (April14th). Contact Gabriel Racca if you would like more information about setting up one of these clubs at your school.
Come check out our brown-bag Meriendas most Thursdays in Bailey 318 from 12-1pm or the Hall Center Latin American Seminars which continue to focus on Environmental Change in Latin America, Fridays 3:30-5:00 throughout the semester. Our most recent newsletter is also available by clicking here. ¡Bienvenidos!
Bienvenidos
