Graduate Committee

The Graduate Committee provides oversight for matters concerning the M.A. Program in Latin American Studies.

Minutes are to be sent to all committee members for approval and to the Director. Approved minutes are to be disseminated to LAS faculty on a timely basis.

Standing Charges

  1. Evaluate graduate student applications for admission;
  2. Nominate applicants for on-campus scholarships, fellowships, and GTA positions;
  3. Prepare recruitment materials;
  4. Revise program information;
  5. Update graduate booklets, website, and related materials;
  6. Advise the Director and Graduate Director on curriculum planning, review, and revision of the graduate program,
  7. Coordinate course offerings with other units on campus
  8. Appoint a subcommittee for hearing and evaluating graduate student petitions and grievances;
  9. Coordinate graduate assessment.

Specific Charges for 2011-12

  1. Develop and submit for approval a proposal for a joint degree program, School of Education Master’s Degree and Latin American Studies Master’s Degree
  2. Serve as the selection committee for the graduate FLAS awards, coordinating with admissions and the Undergraduate Committee
  3. Organize and run the Graduate Research Symposium held in the Spring, selecting the date, finding judges, lining up a luncheon speaker, and selecting abstracts to determine which graduate students participate.
  4. Assist the Director, the Assistant Director, and Office Manager in compiling data and preparing periodic reports on Graduate admissions,  maintaining records and data on LAS graduate students (time to degree, areas of concentration, placement, etc.), and other data for program assessment and IRIS reporting.
  5. Develop a specific set of guidelines for teaching LAA 701
  6. Develop recruitment strategies
  7. Work with the associate and assistant director in developing funding strategies to support LAS graduate students
  8. Develop a Learner Outcomes Assessment pilot plan for the graduate program, as mandated by the College and the Office of the Provost
