Spring 2019 Competition
Do you want to study a language and/or Latin American and Caribbean studies course in Spring 2019?
Well, you are in luck, because tuition and stipend funding is available!
The KU Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), a newly designated 2018-2022 Comprehensive National Resource Center by the U.S. Department of Education, supports undergraduate and graduate students through full academic year and summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships.
For this year only, CLACS is authorized to offer FLAS fellowships for the Spring 2019 term. In this circumstance, CLACS is able to offer:
- For Undergraduate students: Spring 2019 term FLAS Fellowship that covers up to $5,000 for tuition and provides a $2,500 stipend.
- For Graduate students: Spring 2019 term FLAS Fellowship that covers up to $9,000 for tuition and provides a $7,500 stipend.
FLAS fellowships are awarded to students that display a potential for high academic achievement based on indices such as grade point average, class ranking, or similar measures.
CLACS currently awards FLAS fellowships to students studying: Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Kakchiqel, and Miskito; students may also submit applications to be considered (with special permission) for FLAS fellowships in the less-commonly-taught languages currently under development at KU (Quechua, K’iche’ Maya, Tlapenec) or in indigenous Latin American languages with programs identified at other institutions.
The application deadline for Spring 2019 Term FLAS Fellowships is November 16, 2018. Download the application.
Students should submit an application, using the application document, and all supplemental materials to email@example.com. Use the subject heading: “Last Name, First Name – FLAS Application”. Letters of recommendation should also be sent to Aron Muci.
It is the student's responsibility to make certain that the application is complete; incomplete applications will not be considered. The CLACS FLAS Selection Committees will review all applications and make decisions in the late November. Fellows will be notified shortly thereafter.
Contact the FLAS Coordinator for any questions or concerns. The FLAS Coordinator can also offer advice on the application process.
